PNP to recruit 10,000 more cops

THE Mansion, Baguio City -- Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Jesus “Ami” Verzosa, who attended the Cabinet and internal security operation meeting with President Gloria Arroyo here, said the hiring of more cops is needed considering that the current police to civilian ratio is one policeman to every 700 civilians.

The ideal police to civilian ratio is 1:500, Verzosa said.

Verzosa said the PNP will hire 10,000 rookie cops and will provide police patrol cars to every police station nationwide and will require a budget of more or less P2 billion, program which the PNP and the Department of the Interior and Local Government want to pursue in the next five years.

Earlier news reports have it that with the proposed hiring of additional 10,000 cops next year, the police-population ratio will improve to 1:649, or an improvement of at least eight percent from the current ratio.

The major initiative being undertaken by the PNP is in line with the department’s Integrated Transformation Program which aims to bring out police service at its best. Cesar Reyes
