PGMA inspects bridge project in Tawi-Tawi

Bongao, Tawi-Tawi (11 March) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo visits Tawi Tawi Province Thursday, to personally inspect the status of the ongoing Tawi-Tawi Bridge Road Partnership Project (TBRPP), one of PGMA?s major infrastructure programs in the ARMM.

The TBRPP, which falls under the President?s Bridges Program, aims to link the capital of this southernmost province of Mindanao to mainland Tawi-Tawi through the construction of a kilometer-long bridge, its approaches and attached road components that will cross the Manauk Channel.

Total project cost for the three (3) Bridges & Approaches Project is marked at P96, 566,550. It started construction July 2007 and is expected for completion July 15 2011.

The TBRPP, which has five components,: the upgrading of the 7.6 kilometer Sanga-Sanga road, the upgrading of the 8.45 kilometer Lapid-Lapid road, the construction of Sanga-Sanga bridge, the construction of Lapid-Lapid bridge, and the construction of Bakhaw Dakula Link Road, will connect the five mainland municipalities of the province, namely: Panglima Sugala, Sapa-Sapa, Tandubas, Lunguyan and Bongao. Total project cost is P342-million,

It can be recalled; the President, together with officials from Growth Equity Mindanao-United States Agency for International Development (GEM-USAID), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the provincial government of Tawi-Tawi, led the ground breaking and laid the time capsule for the TBRPP project on May 2008.

Once completed, the TBRPP will provide infrastructure support for the fast and efficient delivery of goods and basic services within the province, especially for the social and economic development and the peace process in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Panglima Sugala, a fifth class island municipality has a total land area of 24,520 ha, a population of 50, 504 (as of Aug. 2007), with average family size of six per household. Major tribe and dialect is Sinama and Tausog. (OP/PIA ZC)
