President Obama's education plan

March 02, 2010 8:14 AM

WASHINGTON D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - President Obama says he's committed to improving the U.S. education system.

He unveiled a plan Monday to cut down on drop-out rates and improve under-performing schools.

It offers $900 million in grants for states and school districts agreeing to make big changes to make their schools better.

Another $50 million would go toward drop-out prevention programs.

The goal is to get 5,000 of the nation's worst schools back on track over the next five years.

"In this kind of knowledge economy, giving up on your education and dropping out of school means not only giving up on your future, but it's also giving up on your family's future, giving up on your country's future," said President Obama.

Obama says schools and teachers need to step up because kids only get one shot at an education. He wants school leaders held accountable for their students' successes and failures.
