SIBU, May 14 (Bernama) -- The Home Ministry is giving itself until next year to resolve identification document woes faced by people in Sabah and Sarawak, said its minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.
He said this time frame was needed to enable the various verification processes for the issuing of birth certificates, MyKad identification card and citizenship status to be carried out.
"I have instructed National Registration Department (NRD) officers in Sarawak and Sabah who carry out outreach and mobile unit programmes to be more proactive in the matter.
"They will go down to the ground in rural and interior areas to help people who do not possess personal identification documents. This is a KPI (Key Performance Indicator) of the ministry," he told reporters after opening the ministry's "Meet-the-Customer Day" here Friday.
Earlier, Hishammuddin had presented citizenship certificates to 14 recipients, late registration birth certifcates (four recipients), MyKad (five recipients), MyKid (five recipients).
From January till April this year, Sarawak NRD received 1,770 applications for late registration of births and 1,313 late Mykad applications.
According to the statistics, 25,254 people in Sarawak who are eligible for the documents have yet to file in applications for them.
