Floods hit 8 Jolo villages; destroy houses

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - Flashfloods destroyed houses and submerged at least 8 barangays in Jolo, Sulu after a heavy downpour hit the city Thursday night.

Initial radio reports said the floods affected the following villages: Asturias, Alat, Tulay, Takut-Takut, Chinese Pier, Walled City, San Raymundo and Busbus.

Reports said that the flashfloods hit the capital town around 8 p.m. Thursday.

Local media reported that floodwaters in some affected villages went as high as 7 feet. As of noon Friday, floodwaters in the town were still waist-deep.

Police, meanwhile, were confirming reports that 4 people, including 2 children, died from drowning.

Initial reports also indicate that at least 200 houses may have been destroyed by the flashfloods.

Local officials said that food and other aid have yet to reach the affected residents.

Jolo Mayor Hussin Amin said he will meet barangay officials and representatives of other government line agencies to discuss relief efforts for flood victims.

Amin said the major concern now is food for the flood victims who are scattered in different areas. – with reports from ANC and ABS-CBN Zamboanga
