ZAMBOANGA CITY—The island- province of Sulu has registered a 34-percent passing rate in the recent licensure examination given the public school teachers by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in the province, officials said.

Sulu provincial government information officer Sonny Abing III said 467 of the 1,358 examinees who took the licensure examination for teachers (LET) given by the PRC on Oct. 4, 2009, have passed.

Abing said the 34-percent passing rate is the highest so far in the history of the province of Sulu.

Abing said the result of the LET was sent last week by the PRC to Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan through an electronic mail.

The licensure examination was given by the PRC in Sulu simultaneously with the provinces of Tawi-Tawi and Palawan.

Abing said the holding of the LET in Sulu was made possible through the strong representation of Tan to the PRC.

Tan said board examination for nurses would also be administered by the PRC in Sulu starting next year.

Tan said the conduct of board examinations in Sulu is a big help for the graduates of the province in terms of expenses.

He said the examinees are now spending less in taking the board examination. Before, they had to travel to Zamboanga City to be able to take the test. The provincial government, through the provincial PRC coordinator, is arranging for the conduct of the oath-taking of the LET passers to be held in Jolo, the capital town of Sulu.

The schedule will be announced later pending approval by PRC, Abing said.

He said the the PRC regional office in Zamboanga City is now making the necessary preparations for the registration of LET takers scheduled to be given in April in Sulu.

“We hope to maintain the prestige that we have at the moment and prove to the whole world that Tausugs are mentally well-off and can compete globally in terms of intellectual capacity,” he said.
