JOLO, Sulu – Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan formally inaugurated the newly renovated National Museum-Sulu in Patikul town in an effort to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of the people of the province.
The museum here underwent a major renovation and facelift of the edifice after Sulu First Lady Hja. Nurunisah A. Tan expressed great concerned to preserve the artifacts, culture, traditions, and civilization of the people living in this part of the country.
The project includes the general rehabilitation and renovation of the museum, and the donation of items of historical and cultural values, the governor said.
“People in their own perspective are distinguished and identified by their respective cultures, traditions, and civilization, which is why we need to revitalize the museum to showcase our culture and trades,” Mrs. Tan said.
“We don’t like to see the repository of our heritage (the museum), to be lost by neglect and effects of time.
The museum must also be in a condition where our valued heritage must be stored,” she added.
National Museum Director Eufemia Catolin praised and recognized the effort of Mrs. Tan as she thanked the governor for his total support for the project.
In his message, Tan emphasized that “there is a need to rewrite the history of Sulu since Sulu is the cradle of civilization in the Philippines, and it is only through our past that we can plan for our future.”
The governor reminded all guests in attendance at the inauguration that “we must give our children good memories, and impart good habits, for them to have better character, confidence, and proud of the past, a positive and brighter future.”
The governor and Mrs. Tan lead all guests on a tour of the museum, where on display are various pictures of the old Sulu, past sultans, utensils, indigenous furniture, weapons, artworks, and other historical imprints of the people of Sulu.
