Environment badly damaged in Gulf leak

LETTER - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD
POSTED: Saturday, May. 15, 2010

I find it distressing how so much of our concerns surrounding the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico are focused on the economy and job/tourism losses when I think a larger issue is the effect on the environment.

We should be more focused on our distant futures and that of our future generations than the immediate dent in our already-injured economy. Technically car crashes and oil spills raise our gross domestic product so this should be good for our economy in the end, right?

I feel that so many Americans want results and commodities quickly that we have neglected to think of the future results of our actions. I think that is part of why we are living in a world with pollution and diminishing resources now.

The effects of oil spills are so detrimental to the environment that I find that aspect hard to ignore. When I heard about the oil spill the animals and the environment were the first victims of this disaster to come to my mind. I hope that no expense is spared to restore the Gulf of Mexico to its original state.
